The Abbey Theatre brought its production of Sean O’Casey’s timeless classic The Plough and the Stars to Cork, following a limited run at The Barbican, London.
The plays depicts Dublin tenement life during the 1916 Rising, combining political complexities and moral insights in a powerful and moving human drama. The story is told through the eyes of such legendary characters as Bessie Burgess, Mrs Gogan, The Young Covey, Fluther Good and Rosie Redmond, who ignite the play with their banter, rancour and humour until tragedy strikes and the full horror and waste of the fight for freedom is realised.
The cast included Cathy Belton (Nora), Anthony Brophy (The Covey), Catherine Byrne (Bessie Burgess), Olwen Fouere (Mrs Gogan), Owen McDonnell (Jack Clitheroe), John Kavanagh (Uncle Peter), Laura Murphy, Amelia Crowley, Aonghus Og McAnally, Bill Murphy, Conor Delaney, Aidan Turner and Simon O’Gorman.
