The Pillowman
The National Theatre returned to Cork with Martin McDonagh’s ‘The Pillowman’, winner of the 2004 Olivier Award for Best New Play.
The play, visiting Ireland for the first time, is a viciously funny and savage tale about a writer in a totalitarian state who is interrogated about the gruesome content of his short stories and their similarities to a number of child-murders that are happening in his town.
John Crowley’s original NT production was recreated by director Toby Frow. The cast was led by Edward Hogg (Michal), Lee Ingleby (Katurian), Jim Norton (Tupolski) and Ewan Stewart (Ariel), with Bryony Hannah, Jordan Metcalfe, Victoria Pembroke and Mike Sherman.
‘The Pillowman’ was designed by Scott Pask; the lighting designer was Hugh Vanstone, associate lighting designer Catriona Silver; music by Paddy Cunneen, and sound by Paul Arditti. The fight director was Terry King.
