A bordello opera by Johnny Hanrahan
Based on Maupassant's affectionately comic short story, ‘The House of Madam Tellier’ is set in a small dockside brothel, where Madam T and her girls entertain local worthies in her genteel parlour; offering the promise and the glimpse of the erotic and exotic. An improvised family evolves in this place where private desires and pain are embraced in an atmosphere of tea, illicit sex and sympathy but when Madam T is asked to revisit her own country family as communion sponsor for her niece, her entire entourage decamps to her home village, participating in the solemn ceremonies to hilarious and transformative effect.
