Venue: Cork Opera House

Project Description:
As part of the China/Ireland Cultural Exchange, the acclaimed Shanghai Dramatic Arts Centre came to Cork for the European premiere of ‘Chang Hen Ge’.

‘Chang Hen Ge’, literally ‘Song of Everlasting Sorrow’, depicts the tragic life and loves of Wang Qiyao, from her days as a "Miss Shanghai" in the late 1940s through to her murder in the mid 1980s. Taken from Wang Anyi's critically acclaimed 1996 novel, the play mirrors Wang Qiyao’s journey through life against the social and political upheaval of 20th century China.

This spectacular, large cast drama was presented in Mandarin with English surtitles

The Shanghai Dramatic Arts Centre played host earlier in 2004 to The Gate Theatre’s internationally acclaimed production of ‘Waiting for Godot’ as part of the hugely successful Irish Festival of Arts and Culture in China.
