Project Partner:
Dave Hannigan

Launch
Date: 9 November 2005

Project Description:
Dave Hannigan was commissioned by Cork2005 to write the history of Cork's sportsmen and women, in celebration of the important place that sport plays in Cork's cultural life.

Hannigan, a distinguished local sports writer now based in the United States, produced a major survey of the sporting achievements of the sons and daughters of Cork .

The most sporting county in Ireland, Cork has a deep legacy of achievement that stretches far beyond the headline makers such as Christy Ring, Jack Lynch, Danno Mahony, Jimmy Barry-Murphy, Sonia O’Sullivan, Roy Keane and Dr Pat O’Callaghan.

Dave Hannigan captures the tales behind all the Cork born men and women that achieved greatness in their chosen sporting disciplines.

The book also records the historic events that will be forever associated with Cork. Events such as the first ever Steeplechase from Buttevant to Doneraile, the All-Ireland Senior Hurling and Football double of 1990, the Cork contributions to Ireland’s triple crowns of 1940s and 1980s.

The Evening Echo published and distributed 4,000 copies of the work when it was successfully completed.
