Date: 1 - 3 April 2005
Project Description:
The inaugural 'European Union Chess Championship' was the first full international tournament to be held in Ireland for 12 years, and the first ever outside Dublin.
Over 100 chess players representing more than 20 countries made their way to Cork, where leading professional players and talented amateurs battled it out during the ten day championship organised by the Cork Chess Club. It was followed by the annual Cork Chess Congress.
Ranging from 9 to 78 years of age, over 350 participants competed in the championship and the congress, including Grand Masters and amateurs, men and women. Approximately 1,250 games were played across the two tournaments, amounting to over 4,815 hours of chess.
