Date: Year long
Venue: Community spaces throughout Cork
Project Description:
At the heart of this community centred garden project was the concept of the Mandala - a circular symbol of unity which is reflected in the support network of a community gardens association which was established throughout the project between communities.
Since spring 2003 the Cork Mandala of Community Gardens had been working with individuals and communities towards the creation of community gardens, providing expert advice, workshops on specific practical and creative skills, a resource library and a team of voluntary workers. Cork Mandala of Community Gardens offered social and educational events including garden visits, lectures, and video showings. Individuals and communities were welcomed to participate. Participants were facilitated to design, create, maintain and develop a long term vision for a garden in response to the needs of their community. Visual arts and performance-based celebrations were also integral parts of the gardens in 2005.
