Project Description:
The recipient of numerous awards, including the Willard L. Metcalf Award from The American Academy of Arts and Letters and two New York Foundation for the Arts fellowships, Desirée Alvarez is a fabric artist, painter, printmaker and writer.

She paints and prints images on long fabric veils.  Some are structures that can be entered like giant room-sized shells.  She has exhibited her fabric art at Housatonic Museum, El Museo del Barrio, The American Academy of Arts and Letters, Queens Theater in the Park, Dorfman Projects, International Print Center New York, Wesleyan University and many other museum and gallery spaces in the United States and abroad.

Her drawings are currently touring the world as part of an international drawing collaborative called ‘Weather Report’, recently making stops at museums and galleries in Australia, South Africa, and Vietnam.  Her work has been written about in The New York Times and other journals.  She writes poetry and her writing received the annual non-fiction award from Denver Quarterly.  With a BA from Wesleyan University and MFA from School of Visual Arts, Alvarez teaches at City University New York, New York College of Technology.

During her four week visit to Cork Printmakers, Desiree gave a talk on her work and a demonstration on 'Drypoint and Woodblock Printing on Fabric'.
