Project Description:
The Ford Boxes by Bik van der Pol (Liesbeth Bik and Jos van der Pol) wasis an architectural research project which focused on the impact of the Ford car factory in Cork (which closed in 1984) and how it influenced the built environment of the city.
Their research took the 'Ford box' as its point of departure. The artists examined the relationship between Cork and Ford from an industrial, architectural and artistic point of view, focusing primarily on these wooden boxes that were used to deliver car parts for the Ford T Model, to Cork. Through travelling around Cork, interviewing ex Ford employees, and locating the remaining boxes, which were often re-used as dog kennels, garden sheds and in some cases, even houses, Bik van der Pol examined how this global industry became integrated into Cork society.
From Bik Van Der Pol's research and findings, a new box structure was made, adjusted to the times we live in now. This box was used as a meeting place, a place where the research was laid out, etc.
