Project Description:
Catherine David was born in Paris in 1954. She studied literature, linguistics and art history at the Sorbonne, Paris.
She is currently Rudolf Arnheim guest professor at Humboldt University Berlin and is researching further developments of ‘Contemporary Arab representations’. She was responsible for the program at Witte de With Centre for Contemporary Art in Rotterdam over the past three years.
David has an extensive background as a curator, having worked in this capacity also at the Musée National d’Art Moderne Centre Georges Pompidou, Marseille Museums, and Galerie Nationale du Jeu de Paume, Paris. Between 1994 and 1997, she was a director of Documenta X, Kassel and also curated the film and video programme of the 1999 XXIV Biennial of Sao Paolo.
“It’s time to understand that there is nothing outside of modernity, no simple contrasts between Centre and Periphery, Modern and Pre-Modern. ... we should imagine that there are many rooms in the house of modernity, and that modernity is a collection of many different processes of cultural construction.”
Catherine David
