Venue: Granary Theatre

Project Description:
Aesthetics and Politics was a day-long seminar by international curator, Catherine David, which analysed aesthetics in relation to social and political situations, and encouraged people to think more deeply about the role played today by cultural practices in our own countries. The seminar featured sociologist Smaïn Laacher (author of the influential survey about the inhabitants of the Red Cross Camp, Sangatte, Calais) and focused on issues surrounding migration, and the representation of the refugee, specifically focusing on the Sangatte Camp, which closed in 2003 after much public pressure and debate about immigration.
