Project Description:
The Backwater Artists Group was founded in 1990 by graduates of the Crawford College of Art and Design. Based in Wandesford Quay, it is now the largest group studios in Ireland with 27 studios, 17 of which are for painting and multimedia, six for sculpture, two for bursaries and two for postgraduate students.

In 2005 one of the studios was used as an artist in residence space for visiting artists to Cork.

A major exhibition of sculpture by BAG artists and those using the project spaces in the studios, IN HOUSE OUT, was held in the Courtyard of Wandesford Quay in June. At the same time a series of Artist’s Talks were held in the Lecture Theatre at the Crawford Municipal Art Gallery as well as Artist Workshops. An outdoor Video Event was held during Art Trail 2005 and Studio Visits were facilitated and organised. The aim of the residency was to show citizens and visitors in Cork the continuing creativity of the Backwater Artists, the endurance of the artistic spirit and the heroism of the Cork studios.
