Project Description:
'Cork Artists Collective Residency Programme' evolved as an innovative series of artist exchanges and events throughout 2005.
Artists in the Collective undertook residencies and developed projects in India, Japan and China throughout the year. The Collective hosted international contemporary artists, curators, theorists and educators who participated in residencies, critical dialogue, exhibitions and collaborations within the city. Throughout the year curators, theorists and educators such as Suzanne O'Shea, Cliodhna Shaffrey, Sunam Gopinath and Grant Watson visited the Collective as part of the objective of facilitating critical dialogue and collaboration and developing the programme for the project.
In September and October 2005, presentations were given by various resident artists and curators and Collective artists, in Triskel and other venues.
The project culminated in an exhibition which included work by Collective and visiting resident artists. The month-long exhibition allowed the opportunity to present the diversity of practice, host projects, exhibitions, performances, and to create off-site installations initiated by the Collective and resident international artists.
Curator Cliodhna Shaffrey and Ruth Devine created a parallel to the works on show by collecting an insightful archive based on the travel experiences of the artists involved. These were collected through email and conversation and were presented in Triskel during the exhibition and compiled in a publication after the event.
This outlook towards networking, conversation, collaboration and communication began new interdisciplinary and international relationships and introduced opportunities to sustain wider exchanges to enrich the artists' practice locally and the cultural life of the city.
