Niamh Lawlor in China
Date: 3 – 18 September 2005
Venue: 411 Gallery, Redstar Culture Hotel, Hangzhou City, China
Deng Da Fei and Sun Xin Chong in Cork
Project Description:
Niamh Lawlor's residency involved the slower route to China via Russia and Mongolia. She spent time in Beijing but her main base while on residency was with the 411 Gallery in Hangzhou City where she also made a solo exhibition using installation and video in the Red Star Culture Hotel.
Her work in the ‘Terminal’ exhibition evolved from her experience of her travel and of Chinese culture as a 'foreigner' without a common language.
The Cork Artists Collective invited Chinese artists Deng Da Fei and Sun Xin Chong, who have most recently worked out of studio spaces in the 411 Gallery in Hangzhou City, to participate in the residency programme. Deng Da Fei and Sun Xin Chong worked out of spaces in the Cork Artist Collective project space, The Guest House and their work was included in the ‘Terminal’ exhibition at the end of the project.
Deng Dafei and SunXin Chong also presented video works made while in Cork on their return to China. They planned to exhibit work developed from their residency in 2006 in contemporary art venues in Shanghai with support from Cork City Council who twinned with Shanghai during 2005.
