Art Encounters

Project Partner:
Mayfield Community Arts Centre
Project Description:
Art Encounters brought young people from Mayfield Community Arts Centre in Cork, Nicaragua and Columbia to live and work together as part of an artistic exchange.
During a month-long residency the young people explored themes related to identity and equality, while they shared cultural experiences and worked together on a public art project, drawing on their artistic interests: the Nicaraguan group, Funarte, mainly with mural; and the Columbian group, Centro Colombo Americano, in visual arts, cinema and performance arts.
The residency culminated in an exhibition which featured photography, video projections and sculptures. The varied work of the young artists explored the dreams of young people all over the world and the Millennium Development Goals.
In line with the exchange’s aim to make arts more accessible, a public bus toured the work at the close of the project.

A video, photography work and sculptural pieces were displayed on trees along the walking trail in the grounds of the Centre. The artists shared their skills with the young participants of Art Encounter during the second week of the exchange to produce a living willow sculpture.
