Project Description:
Soul of the Moutains celebrated Ireland’s enduring love affair with American roots traditions with a long, cool weekend of concerts that demonstrated there's much more to that Country thang than clean teeth, hat acts and achey-breaky hearts. Soul of the Mountains will take audiences on a journey into the heart and soul of America, from high lonesome Appalachian bluegrass to shimmering, alt.country desert blues to gothic vaudeville folk and the best Gospel Soul you will ever hear.
The Series kick-started with a double bill, featuring one of the most celebrated Gospel groups ever formed, the Blind Boys of Alabama, who have thrilled audiences with their stirring blues, foot-stomping gospel and slow-burning soul. They were ably supported by Cork City’s very own Lee Valley String Band.
The Savoy Theatre hosted two of Americana’s most intriguing acts – Howe Gelb’s cult country collective Giant Sand and the distinctly gothic husband and wife duo The Handsome Family.
Ex-Long Ryder Sid Griffin’s bluegrass outfit The Coal Porters raised the roof at the Farranree Community Centre with a night of Appalachian harmonies and fiery bluegrass picking in a double header with Irish bluegrass band The Rough Deal String Band – who also entertained shoppers in Blackpool Shopping Centre.
Declan Sinnott played The Corner House Bar and The Lee Valley String Band rounded off the series with their usual Monday night Corner House session in a special double-header with Irish country act Niall Toner.
