Daughters of Albion

Project Partner:
Curators: Bryn Ormrod, Philip King

Date: 6 May 2005
Venue: Cork Opera House

Project Description:
The World Premiere of 'Daughters of Albion' brought together a unique and remarkable assembly of English singers, songwriters and interpreters of traditional song and an equally fascinating collection of English songs – ranging from ancient ballads to 21st Century rock.

Connected by a strong sense of place, a certain wit and singularity of voice, June Tabor, Norma Waterson, Eliza Carthy, Kathryn Williams and Thea Gilmore sang songs of experience, shot through with a deliciously dark seam of melancholy, a weathered beauty and echoes of the English landscape from where they came. From June Tabor's startlingly beautiful interpretations of classic folk song to Kathryn Williams’ magical take on everyday life, ‘Daughters of Albion’ celebrated women's experience and explored the nature of English song.

The ‘Daughters of Albion’, with support from a House Band led and arranged by Kate St John, performed lost songs discovered by nineteenth century female collectors and West Country Gypsies, together with material from the repertoire of many of England’s greatest contemporary singer/songwriters, including Sandy Denny, Lal Waterson, Kirsty MacColl, Anne Briggs, Vashti Bunyan and Kate Bush.
