Project Description:
Seminar and exhibition on how libraries foster cultural expression and freedom of expression and how libraries have suffered in conflicts.
Speakers included Alex Byrne, President-elect of the International Federation of Library Associations and a long-term advocate of freedom of expression; Taghreed Al-Qudsi, a Palestinian librarian working in Kuwait; Sue Cole of the Blue Shield organisation; Michael D. Higgins, TD, published poet and long-time advocate of the importance of intellectual freedom and cultural expression.
Cork City Libraries also organised a 24-hour series of readings of banned books, and texts by authors who have been banned in countries across the world.
