Project Description:
An anthology of European Travel Writing on Cork, published to celebrate the historic designation of our city as European Capital of Culture.
The Collins Press

‘As Others Saw Us: Cork Through European Eyes’ is a major achievement of research, transcription and translation that honours the stranger's inward journey into our safe harbour for ships.

The aim of this unique book was to show the citizens of Cork what fellow Europeans thought of them.

The anthology contains views and opinions by continental writers about Cork from medieval times to the present. The varied texts include excerpts from travel books, essays, newspaper articles and memoirs. Each piece has a brief introduction about its author and the context in which it was written. The foreign language is on one page and the English translation opposite. Designed to appeal to the general rather than specialist reader, the excerpts are short and from the widest variety of viewpoints.
