“This is one of those enthralling projects that all too often escape public notice.”

Project Description:
Cork has always been an innovator and locus of sound art. The physical nature of Cork, a marsh city placed within a sound canyon of hills, has meant that sounds dominate historically, from Shandon's Bells to the afternoon cries of Evening Echo sellers.

Sound Out was an exhibition of Sound Art for the streets of Cork, curated by Danny McCarthy (Cork), sound and performance artist; and David Toop (London), international composer, writer, musician and sound artist. Four international artists installed their work in various venues for the Exhibition.

Christina Kubisch (Berlin) installed her work ‘The Birds’ in the tree outside the Cork Vision Centre on North Main Street. A live sound piece powered by solar panels, the work was based on the story of the Battle of the Birds 1620 and inspired by the painting in the Crawford Municipal Art Gallery.

Scanner (London) created a sound piece ‘Marsh Traces’ for Wandesford Quay based on the dual language Irish and English street names in Cork that reflect the history of the city.

Max Eastley (London) created a sonic sculpture ‘Dry Sea’ for the main entrance to University College Cork on Western Road.

Akio Suzuki (Japan) created a listening trail around the city which responded to the sounds that are specific to Cork City, inviting people to pause and be aware of their city.

Akio Suzuki gave a recital on stone flutes at the launch of the exhibition in the Lewis Glucksman Gallery. The artists visited Cork for an artists talk in March 2005.
