Journey of Light

12,000 Cork people, along with actors, performers and entertainers lit up the city quays of Cork in ‘Journey of Light’.

Starting at Cork Opera House, the procession took ticket holders on a journey along the quayside, over Shandon Bridge and back along Pope’s Quay to Christy Ring Bridge. Eight themed areas along the route used colour, sound and performance to captivate the audience.

The people of Cork made up the most spectacular part of the journey, with everyone embarking on the journey carrying their own individual light, creating a rare display of moving light along the city’s River Lee.

Groups of 200 people at a time were led along each section of the route by ‘light bearers’. The journey started off on an energetic note, with drummers and belly dancers from Cork company, Rhythm of the Spirit and fire-jugglers from Cork Community Circus washed in vibrant red floodlighting.

Moving along the pathway, all age groups and tastes were catered for with a feast of entertainment for the senses including projections of light and animations onto buildings, live performances by children from CADA and traditional singing of Celtic chant by Deirdre Ní Chinnéide and Nóirín Ní Riain.

Sporting enthusiasts also had opportunity to see some of Cork’s current sporting trophies displayed in the windows of the William Clarke building on Lavitt’s Quay.

Choir singing was performed in relay by choirs Madrigal 75, Seraphim and the Cork Gospel Choir on the steps of St. Mary’s Church and the Dominican Centre on Pope’s Quay was lit with candlelight by artist Valerie Keating.
