Date: 1 July – 10 September 2005
Venue: Charles Fort, Kinsale
Project Description:
Charles Fort, a 17th century forts in Kinsale, was the setting for a giant mixed media installation by radical horticultural artist Tony Heywood. ‘The Calling’ was an experimental sculpture and sound garden inspired by tales of local saints, legend and superstition.
For three months, the installation took visitors on an eerie journey between past and present. Giant figures, amorphous and covered in dazzling jewels, appeared to emerge from the sea towards the audience, lurking in shadows and crawling over the ramparts, as they ‘occupied’ the fort. A haunting soundtrack by renowned sound artist David Toop emanated from the sculpture garden adding a multi-sensory dimension to the installation. The work included chanting by the Glenstal Monks.
