European Capital of Culture Designation
"To highlight the richness and diversity of European cultures and the features they share and promote greater mutual acquaintance between European Union citizens..." (1)
Designed to "contribute to bringing the peoples of Europe together", the European City of Culture project was launched at inter-governmental level, at the initiative of Melina Mercouris, the Greek Minister of Culture at that time, on 13 June 1985. The initial scheme was designed to celebrate Europe’s rich and varied cultural activities, acknowledging the important role which its cities have played in the creation and spread of Europe’s cultures.
